The Friends of The Armitt

Why Join The Friends of The Armitt?

If you love the Lake District, you can help to preserve all that is best about it from wherever you are by joining the Friends of the Armitt Trust. (registered charity 518062)

Help preserve priceless collections of books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, prints, fine art and artefacts that have belonged to or were donated by some of the best loved names in English cultural life—Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, Canon Rawnsley (co-founder of the National Trust), William and Dorothy Wordsworth, Harriet Martineau, Ernest de Selincourt and more.

They all loved the Lake District and worked hard over many years to preserve its unique cultural, artistic and environmental heritage.  The Armitt Trust comprising the Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library at Ambleside, was founded in 1912 by the Armitt Sisters to support this work and to provide resources, continuing to build the collection for future generations.  Nearly a century later, the work of the Armitt is more essential than ever.

The Friends exist to support the Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library and to encourage interest and research in the history of Ambleside, its neighbouring parishes and the wider Lake District.
