How You Can Help

The New Armitt Centre is a beautiful building. Designed and built with the care of the Collection as the primary aim.

Our only income to run the Centre is through Museum admissions and fund-raising events. Support is available for specific tasks such as conservation, but the main core costs of running the Centre are difficult to meet. We have one full-time member of staff and all other management and staffing is voluntary.

THE ARMITTEER PROGRAMME

The future of the Armitt is at great risk and we urgently need your help. Support us now by becoming an ARMITTEER

The Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library (registered charity no 526975) receives no public funding towards operating costs and whilst we can often be successful in grant applications for funding specific projects, we rely on admission prices and museum shop sales to cover our operating costs, pay for our two members of staff, exhibition costs and the expenses for our 30 excellent volunteers.

The Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library is here for everybody in the local community and visitors to the area.

The Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library contains evidence of the ‘building blocks’ that have shaped Ambleside and the Lake District – PLEASE DON’T LET THE LIGHTS GO OUT

The Armitt Gallery, Museum & Library is a registered museum meeting national standards and has been actively involved in many worthwhile projects in recent years. Some of our recent achievements include:

Exhibitions:

In 1999 a changing programme of exhibitions was introduced. Since then we have staged 15 special exhibitions with subjects ranging from Kurt Schwitters, the Romans, and Beatrix Potter to local history exhibitions featuring loans from major collections around the country

 Special Events:

These have included a Kurt Schwitters Roadshow, painting demonstrations, children’s microscope sessions and a Fungi Foray.

 Volunteers:

30 marvellous Volunteers give their time regularly to help run the ARMITT

 Collections:

The ARMITT is seen as an appropriate repository for archival material concerning Ambleside and Central Lakeland and the local community with around 300 items of local interest being received each year. New major acquisitions continue to be achieved with the help of grants and donations.

 Education:

A new education project (2004) was established which aims to deliver resources to local schools and young people in the community. A series of workshops have been developed for schools visiting the museum and the range of museum displays has been widened for all family interest, with interactive computer displays and hands on activities

The ARMITT has participated in the Cumbria Museums for learning cluster group working with other Museums and Heritage centres in the County.

European Projects:

A 2 year project in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University called COINE (Cultural Objects in Networked Environments) was initiated in 2002 with the aim of developing a software programme allowing people to tell their own stories and share their heritage experiences.

 The ARMITTEER fundraising initiative

The move to its purpose built home in 1997 has resulted in greater operating costs which cannot be met by visitor income alone, hence this desperate appeal for your help.

An additional £25,000 per annum for the next three years will give us valuable time for the effects of our Business Plan to come to fruition.

To achieve this we need 300 people who would be prepared to subscribe a minimum of £5.00 per month for three years. with the addition of gift aid we will reach our target.

 THAT’S WHERE YOU COME IN!

Please help the Armitt now by becoming one of our first 300 ‘Armitteers.’
