Man & Mountains Exhibition

An Exhibition for the Cumbrian Mountain Festival 2002

Man and Mountains celebrates the human side of the Lake District.  For centuries we have celebrated the natural beauty of the landscape, here we celebrate the man-made contribution and explore how it has changed the surroundings as a result. Mining, quarrying, farming and the more modern recreation industries of walking and climbing have all left their mark. They have shaped the hills and valleys we see around us and it is now a landscape that reflects culture and human life alongside nature and physical characteristics.  We also highlight some of the conservation issues caused by man. This exhibition displays some of the best of the Armitt collection alongside exhibits from the Lake District’s working community.  Farmers and shop-keepers, quarries and mines, museums and local residents have all contributed to enable Man and Mountains to tell the story of the working fells.
