Discover the Romans in Cumbria and the importance of archaeology in piecing together the past.  

 Suitable for KS2

What the session includes:

  1. Playing detective and examining the evidence for life in a Roman Fort, the day to day running of a garrison and the ever-present danger of the enemy!

  2. Groups will explore the museum's collection of genuine Roman artefacts excavated from the Roman fort of Galava at Waterhead. Find out how archaeologists work and how they record their findings. A handling session lets children feel what it means to be ‘in touch with the past’  Do things get better?  Compare a Roman Mortaria with food processing methods from different periods.
  3. Tackle the problems of Roman numeration, learn how the Romans counted. Play the games of Tabula and knucklebones testing arithmetic and tactics!
  4. See our famous Roman gravestone and learn what happened to the Roman fort.
